I had the opportunity to interview Dr. Werner Lumm the Chief Information Officer at Maranatha Baptist University about his role at MBU and some advice to those trying to get into the technological field.Dr. Lumm earned a bachelor’s degree in mathematics and agriculture and a master’s degree in secondary school administration and supervision from Northwest Missouri State University. He also earned an educational specialist degree in educational administration and supervision from the University of Toledo and a doctor’s degree from Bob Jones University in educational administration. - MBU Advantage
What made you interested in technology?
I have always had an interest in things scientific and mathematical. I have two sons, one is a web developer turned attorney and the other is a software developer. I have been exposed to that. My wife has been involved in computer graphics for a good share of her life so I have been immersed in that.
How many years have you been in the IT department at Maranatha?
A couple years.
What are some of your responsibilities at MBU?
My position is unique. I have two offices; chief information officer and facilities manager. As a facilities manager I oversee the facility related things, buildings and grounds as well as the distance education program in the IT. My responsibilities are as much academic as they are technology and that's really my background.
What are some of your favorite tech devices for work?Desktop computer and a smartphone.
What are some of your favorite tech devices for personal use?
At home I use a laptop and a Virtual Private Network. Through the VPN I can access my computer at my other office. I prefer my desktop because of the bigger screen and the keyboard.
What advice would you give someone pursuing your field of work?
Get a undergrad degree in computer science or information systems management. After that it depends on what area you want to go in. If you want to be a computer programer get a masters degree in that or if you want to go more into the management direction get a Master of Business Administration with a heavy technology emphasis or a masters degree in information management.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
The thing about the IT area is what some people call a meritocracy. People who are good are successful, the people who are not are looking for something else to do. I have a good friend that has a son that started college but never finished and is now a share-point developer that makes over a hundred-thousand dollars a year. If you are good, there is a place for you, if your mediocre its a tough world. It is a very competitive area in terms of pay. Those who are good do very well those who are not struggle. If you are interested in the area know as much as you can and be as good as you can.
